The specific problem with Utah winters
It isn't the cold. It's the cycling.
Along the Wasatch Front we get sunny days above freezing followed by nights well below it, over and over from December through March. Snow on the roof melts during the day and refreezes at night. That's the freeze-thaw cycle, and gutters are where it does its damage.
How an ice dam actually forms
- Snow accumulates on the roof
- Heat escaping through the roof (and daytime sun) melts the underside
- That meltwater runs down toward the eaves
- At the eave — colder, and blocked by frozen debris — it refreezes
- Ice builds up into a dam
- Water pools behind the dam and works upward under the shingles
- It enters the soffit, the wall cavity, or the ceiling
Shingles shed water running downhill. They are not designed to hold back standing water pushing uphill. That's the whole failure mode.
What clean gutters actually prevent
Water intrusion. Soffit rot, stained ceilings, wet insulation, drywall damage.
Foundation problems. Downspouts exist to move water away from the house. Blocked ones dump it at the foundation instead — bad in any season, worse when it freezes and expands.
Gutter failure. Debris plus ice is heavy. Brackets pull out of fascia, sections sag, seams separate.
Fascia and soffit rot. Constant overflow keeps that wood wet all winter.
Pest habitat. Wet debris in a protected channel is exactly what a lot of things want to overwinter in.
What clean gutters don't fix
Being honest: gutter cleaning reduces ice dam risk, it doesn't eliminate it. Ice dams also come from heat escaping through a poorly insulated attic. If you get dams every single year on a clean system, the underlying issue is attic insulation and ventilation, and you want a roofer or insulation contractor rather than us.
